Reporting Problems to Google

So I'm still trying to report problems to Google.  Here I see they have a Copyright date of 2008, whereas other pages have 2009.  It's right below a link asking for my feedback, so I click answer a few questions.image

I arrive at their Product Search help center.  Where there's nothing at all to click on or continue.  I tried loading the page several times.

So now I want to contact them about two issues, one of which is that I can't contact them with issues...

When Less is Better - Photography

Any serious photographer knows how important it is to have the right gear when you need the gear.  But there's a ton of reasons to travel light, and while packing for today's shoot, I just realized a new one for me.

I used to travel with all of my gear all of the time - it seemed more important to have the right lens for any situation.  This quickly followed my discovery that if you don't have a camera, you can't take the picture.

It seemed to follow that if you don't have the right lens, you can't take the right picture; I started carrying two lenses everywhere.  If you don't have your tripod, you can't get a long exposure picture; I started carrying my tripod everywhere.  If you don't have the right filter, you can't compensate for the right lighting; I started carrying three filters everywhere.  I even started carrying two cameras at one point, and later three.

At some point, I couldn't realistically carry all of this gear with me everywhere I went, or even on every shoot, so I started seeing benefits in traveling light.

There's the obvious ones that occur to you just thinking of that phrase:  Less weight to carry, less bulk to fit through doors, less gear to get stolen or lose or break.  As you get better at leaving items at home, you find ways to improvise some of your shots.

Sure, I don't have my telephoto zoom lens, but this is still a 10MP camera and I can crop to 1280 on my computer as long as I don't need a poster from it.  Shoot in RAW and compose carefully - you won't get the super zoom, but at least you'll still get the shot.

No tripod?  No problem.  Adjust the lighting a bit, go to manual mode and adjust your camera settings, and find something to set the camera on.  Your camera bag often works fine, and the camera timer or remote trigger lets you snap the picture without touching the camera.

The new reason that occurred to me today while packing my gear is that there's less gear to pack up at the end of a shoot.  Earlier I mentioned that there's less gear to lose, break, or get stolen; there's also less gear to have to track down when you're packing up at the end of the day.

When shooting in different rooms (as I will in today's shoot) I will have less gear to take from room to room.

In fact, today I'm traveling so light, I might not even need my camera bag - that's a true joy.  By learning over time exactly what gear I need to take out, and taking only that, my day of shooting will be much easier.

Traffic Delay 49710d 6h 27m

So I'm driving to my doctor yesterday.  We're talking Chatsworth to Westlake Village, a distance of 19.5 miles.

trafficdelay The time, according to Google Maps, is 31 minutes.  With a potential traffic delay of ... 49710 days, 6 hours, and 27 minutes.  Why it doesn't say the traffic delay is 136 years instead of 49,710 days, I don't know...

Admittedly, there was some traffic delay.  It took me about 48 minutes to get there, but fortunately that was a lot closer to 31 minutes than the other option.

Punctal Plugs

Yesterday I had an operation (a "very minor surgery") to install Punctal Plugs in my tear ducts.

You can see pictures here:
Mayo Clinic   /   Laser My Eye Org   /   Dry Eye Doctor

They also have descriptions of what it is.

The strange thing is, everything I can find on the Internet about Punctal Plugs says it's to treat dry eyes.  Heck, my search on Punctal Plugs on WebMD links to the Dry Eyes topic.

I don't think I have dry eyes, however.  I look at the list of symptoms on WebMD and I don't have any of those.

I originally went to the doctor to get treatment for Trichiasis (or something very similar to it) but this is the treatment I got.

I suppose it's possible that I have some of the symptoms listed for dry eyes, but I can't notice them because the symptoms for my lash misdirection overwhelm them.

My next visit is on 3/11/09, we'll see how it goes then.

countingfailBrowsing Web sites, I found this gem:

Their list of 30 sites shows 12.

Interestingly, their Partner Links section shows ... no links.

Error on Select the Selected Message

My friend Kevin (who runs funeralizeme.com) views my Blog and sees my previous post, Select the selected message?, and wants to see the large picture in it.

selectselect When he clicks on it, he's given the beautiful error message you see here.  The best part being that you can clearly see both error messages at the same time.

Just in case your Internet Explorer crashes while you're trying to view it, I'll tell you what it says:

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.  For more information about this error, click here.  [Debug]  [Close]

False Advertising at Marble Slab?

So I go to Marble Slab last night and see they have something called Fudge Brownie Delight.  They have a big poster on the wall advertising it.  "Chocolate to the sky," it says.

fudgebrowniedelight"Fresh brownie still warm from the oven," it continues to tell us about the dessert.

"Wow," I thought.  "They must be baking brownies all day, to be able to offer me brownie that is still warm from the oven."  So I asked the guy who works there how often they bake brownies.  He looks confused, so I point to the sign.  "It says they are fresh brownies, still warm from the oven.  Are they baking right now?"

"No, they were baked two days ago."

"And they're still warm from the oven," I ask, confused as to how the poster can be accurate.

"No."  When he makes mine, he puts the brownies in the microwave oven and heats them up before putting ice cream on them.

So I ask you - is it false advertising to say that your fresh brownies are still warm from the oven, when they were made two days ago and someone is going to re-heat them in a microwave?

Also, despite me posting about a misspelled sign in Marble Slab on November 17, 2008, the sign still reads "Freshly Pealed Banana."

i am extremely terrified of chinese people

303,000 sites match the term "i am extremely terrified of chinese people" when searched on Google.  What does this mean?

image

You can see this yourself (unless they change it, but fortunately for you I took the screenshot above).  Just go to google.com (I recommend the Classic home, not the portal page) and start typing the phrase "i am extremely" - you don't even have to finish it, they know what you mean.

The other possible answers aren't real good looking, either!  i am extremely depressed.  i am extremely tired.  i am extremely lonely (perhaps because i am extremely terrified of chinese people?).  i am extremely jealous.  i am extremely angry.

Fortunately, there are non-negative ones, too, but being grateful and pleased don't exactly have the oomph of excited, vivacious, outgoing, and other words that can fit in.  Nor does it offer the phrase "i am extremely fond of chinese people."

I suppose that if a bunch of people Blog about this phenomenon, the term will only gain popularity in the Google search.  Who knows what else will show up?  Go ahead, add some comments of phrases you'd like to see on Google.  You never know.  They just may appear.

Select the selected message?

So I go into my Hotmail account, select an e-mail, and then click Delete.

Imagine my surprise when a message tells me, "You need to select at least one message before you can do this. To select one or more messages, just check the box before each message."

I'm sitting here staring at the checkbox which is clarly marked.

I closed my window, reloaded it, and tried it again. I got the same message.

So, I took a screenshot to show the world:
